HOUSE

Il Poggiolo a Codiponte

The original farmhouse, il Poggiolo a Codiponte, is in two parts:

a stone lean-to built against the perimeter walls to the Castle of Codiponte became over the arch of a thousand years the larger Main House, which became the living quarters on the Second Floor… now L’Appartamento Azzurro… and the other on the First and Ground Floors… La Casa Grande… used for working, storage and for the farm animals… cows, pigs, chickens and rabbits, etc. At some point, an attempt was made to transform the Main House into a Master’s House of the First and Second Floors, and storage and the animals would probably have remained on the Ground Floor. This initiative never happened.

Instead, a completely new Master’s House… today, La Casetta… was begun in the Medici-style. The larger and more prosperous looking house was never completed. More than likely, someone died and each heir received one part or, the other, of Il Poggiolo complex. One person must’ve inherited La Casetta which was subsequently sub-divided into two separate properties. We bought the upper floors. Another relative built what is now our neighbour’s house next door ours of La Casetta.

Today, the Main House… La Casa Grande and L’Appartamento Azzurro… are our Summer quarters, while La Casetta is our Winter HQ… it has radiators… and for guests.

Before

A photo medley when we first laid eyes upon il Poggiolo a Codiponte on a cold Saturday afternoon in January 2009. We made an offer there & then, which was accepted the Monday after. So, the adventure began.

Doors & Windows

They came in handy as table tops for big dinner parties out on the aia.

Pre-construction June 2009

We pleaded & paid the builder to clean & carry away trash and debris from nearly 50 years of neglect. It is normally not on any builder’s task list.

Construction

Started in September 2009 and ended in the Spring of 2014.

After

La Casa Grande… or, the Main House… in June 2014.

L’Appartamento Azzurro… or, the Upstairs Apartment.

La Casetta… or, the unfinished Master’s House.

Recent additions

Fireboxes were added in 2018 in the Salotto & Sala da Pranzo nella Casa Grande.
