Genova + Riviera
City & Sea 2009 - 2016
Genoa is a densely packed and historic port buttressed by an arc of mountains cascading down quickly to the Mediterranean Sea. The city is the capital of the Liguria region of Italy dividing the Italian Riviera… Levante to the East and Ponente to the West. I often wander the city to photograph its nooks & crannies or, off-season, travel along the Riviera to capture the vistas of the Mediterranean from the vantage points of the colorful Ligurian towns or, from the heights above the Mediterranean.
Genoa is urban, dense, with layers of its history expressed in the art & architecture of its piazze, palazzi and narrow vistas. The city’s fabric is quirky, tight and often Medieval. Post-WWII buildings bump against the 16th Century palazzo situated on a brick & stone piazza hiding radiating alleyways your mother told you never to go down. But that is where the fascination is, and the beauty, the unexpected. Then, there is the port and Mediterranean Sea beyond. A shimmering contrast of the minimal to the pomp and circumstance of the historic district. Genoa was the richest city in the world for three hundred years. It is why it is referred to as La Superba!
